Dialogue -- The Spatial Dimension of Color is the first artistic dialogue across time and space between the artist Katharina Grosse and her mentor Gotthard Graubner.

As one of the foremost artists of contemporary art scene, Grosse fosters a subversive, multi-dimensional and open mind of thinking. With spray guns and an immense luminous color spectrum, she tends to alter as well as eliminate the borders between the color surface and its spatial surroundings. Her counterpart Graubner has been worldwide renowned since the 60s for his “cushion pictures”.

In this “dialogue”, we can not only detect the influence of the notion “color-space body” conceived by her mentor, but also construe genuinely her radically audacious manner of surpassing the boundaries of painting through merging the colors with their environment. The boundaries between the flat surface and the spatiality are so blurred, even eliminated, that the free and independent spirit is trans-formed as well as sublimed. Two artists of two generations have renewed the legend of the contemporary art with their colors.

As the long-anticipated “dialogue” finally takes place, Yuan Art Museum once again promotes the theme of “Art and Space”, a core topic often presented in its previous exhibitions, events and forums. We would like to express our profound gratitude to Walter Smerling, who has taken over the curatorial arrangements based on his insightful understanding of Yuan Art Museum. Our sincere thanks also go to Fan Di’an, head of the Central Academy of Fine Arts for his efforts in cooperating with Stiftung für Kunst und Kultur e.V. Bonn to present Deutschland 8, a visual and spiritual feast. Last but not least, we wish to thank our artists Katharina Grosse and Gotthard Graubner. Finally we would like to thank all the staff members of the organizers’ and Yuan Art Museum for their dedication and contribution to this fantastic event.
